The Texas Legislature reconvenes Tuesday, and Nightcap has the five bills to keep an eye on in 2013.
No. 5: Senate Bill 86 would ban smoking in all workplaces, indoors and outdoors, including restaurants and bars. More than 40 cities in Texas, including Dallas, already ban smoking in bars and restaurants.
No. 4: House Bill 292 would make playing poker legal as long as it is a live game. The bill would also make online poker illegal. The bill says poker is a game of skill and strategy and not of chance.
No. 3: House Bill 63 would ban reading, writing or sending a text message while driving. You could still dial a number using a hand’s free device or use the GPS feature on a hand-held device.
No. 2: Senate Bill 97 would require a physician to personally administer abortion drugs like RU-486, which is now known as mifepristone. The bill makes it so that the doctor would have to administer all the doses of the drug, even if it takes place over multiple days. Currently, doctors often allow some of the doses to be taken at home.
No. 1: House Bill 337 would make it so that exotic dancers would have to have a license so that they could strip. Also, the exotic dancers would have to “conspicuously display the person’s license on his or her person when conducting business at the sexually oriented business.”
