Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world today with the announcement that he will resign “because of advanced age.”
Once everyone got over their surprise, they started cracking jokes.
5 – Twitter
Pope Benedict XVI was the first pope on Twitter (@pontifex). So, it’s only fitting that he was trending Monday. In December, the vatican put out #askpontifex as a way to talk to the Pope, but it was hijacked by jokesters.
My favorite Pope tweet today:
"If you continue to wear that gigantic hat you will die"- the Pope's doctor—

3 – Meme Frenzy
The resignation sparked a meme frenzy. Certainly, the Lord Sith comparisons will haunt the Pope into retirement.
I mean, he did set the bar pretty high for Catholics this year.
2 – Craigslisted
Shortly after the announcement, a Craigslist ad popped up. It claims to be from the Catholic Church, asking for a new “Bishop of Rome / Successor of Saint Peter / Holy See / Pontifex / “The Pope.”
Some of the duties: waving, sitting, and tweeting.
For some reason, it’s listed as a “sales job.”
1 – Bet on it.
You can bet on who the next Pope will be.
Online bookmakers have already put out the odds. Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson is in the lead with 3-1 odds on paddypower.com. The front runner from the U.S. – Cardinal Timothy Dolan (25-1).
