Acupuncture: The Alternative to Pain Medication?

acupuncture2The Chinese have been using acupuncture for thousands of years–Tamara Elder on the other hand just a few months.

She’s always had headaches and then back pain after she got pregnant.

She said prescription pain medications didn’t work so she turned to acupuncture.

“I mean, it was my last hope,” Tamara said. “Pretty much everything else wasn`t working and I had a headache for three days and it wasn’t going away so he offered it to me and that’s what we did.”

He is Dr.  Douglas Decker–an OB/GYN at Baylor-All Saints. Dr. Decker said he’d rather use acupuncture than heavy medicines during pregnancy and 80% of the time it works like a charm.

“For some people it can really be profound and works readily and you’ll know that it works for them,” Dr. Decker said. “Other times, either we are not doing the acupuncture quite right or sometimes it doesn’t work for some people.”

Dr. Decker uses acupuncture for back pain, shoulder pain, headaches–stuff like that. He said it’s all about getting energy to flow.

“Energy just needs to be flowing properly and my teacher taught it to me,” Dr. Decker said. “It’s like a freeway, if you see cars going by on the freeway its’ okay. If there are no cars on the freeway, something is wrong.”

Dr. Decker said not many western doctors use acupuncture but with more evidence it works more doctors are catching on.

Just four tiny needles did the trick for Tamara.

“Probably within thirty minutes of having the acupuncture done and removed I could feel the relief in my body,” Tamara recalled. “I was able to go home that night and sleep for literally 13 hours, like my body felt so relaxed.”

She was so excited she called her family and friends and posted it on Facebook–and the pain relief lasted about a month.

She’s now had three treatments.

“Never would have I thought it would have worked,” Tamara said. “I thought I was always just doomed to have to take the medication to help. I never thought it would work.”

Dr. Decker said that while more doctors are using acupuncture as an alternative or complimentary treatment the practice is still rarely used.

“We weren’t exposed to it in school, we weren’t taught about it,” Dr. Decker said. “It’s just a whole thought paradigm that most westerners don’t know much about.”

But Tamara does–and oh, by the way she figures she has two new family members. Her newborn son and acupuncture.

“That’s my only option,” Tamara said. “I don’t want to take the medication anymore because it doesn’t work near as good as the acupuncture.”
