An Arlington man is helping share his skills with urban survival training classes. For $60, you can learn all the basics in one day: hunting and trapping, finding shelter, making a fire, etc.
“It’s easy. It really is. People have been doing it for thousands and thousands of years. I think modern society has gotten comfortable with our amenities,” said Dustin (who asked that we not use his last name).
It’s basically what you’d learn in the Boy Scouts. Dustin says they’re skills everyone needs to know. He’s been teaching himself throughout his live. Every now and then, he’ll head out to a remote location and actually ‘live off the land.’
“A lot of people talk about the government collapsing and martial law and government control bans starting civil wars. Though no one really knows what’s going to happen, you’ve gotta be prepared for whatever you can be,” he said.
“We live in a stage today where you don’t know what next week’s gonna bring,” said Brian Bates, who spent a recent Saturday morning taking Dustin’s class..
Dustin calls his class a start, but you have to keep practicing.
He’s realistic about things. He’s not worried about the ‘end of times’ or something like that, but he could see himself in a disaster situation. He wants to make sure he isn’t depending on the government’s help. He wants to be ready to care for himself.
“Do I expect it? Maybe. I don’t really know,” he said. “I definitely prepare myself the best I can.”
“You look at these disasters that happen and what happens afterwards. You just want to be prepared as best as possible,” said Bates.
“I have a wife. I have two girls. I gotta provide for them. I gotta make sure they’re taken care of no matter what,” said Dustin.
